Ukrainians, like many Slavic people, see the warm kitchen as the center of family life. âCome, have something to eat!â are the first words of greeting for children coming home from school, husbands returning from work, or anyone coming home.
Everyday Shopping
It is no surprise that food shopping consumes a significant part of the family budget. Food shops open at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. and stay open until 8:00 p.m. Most of them are open on Sundays too. Some shops close for one-hour lunch breaks. There are many private corner shops open until 11:00 p.m. or even twenty-four hours a day. Modern supermarkets are opening on the outskirts of cities, and a Saturday supermarket shopping trip is becoming increasingly common.
Happily, gone are the days of the empty Soviet food shops, with long lines of people and nothing but canned fish on display. The Ukrainian food-processing industry was among the first to get a taste of the market economy, and the choices now available confirm Ukraineâs âBreadbasketâ status. People have an âas and whenâ approach to shopping, buying fresh food such as dairy products, bread, and ham several times a week. The reason for this is not only the abundance in the shops, but also that most Ukrainian food products have no preservatives, and as a result milk turns sour and bread becomes stale very quickly. Apart from the universal milk and yogurts, there are some dairy products that are distinctly Ukrainianâlike syrky, which are small, chocolate-covered cottage cheese pieces stuffed with jam or nuts, and ryazhanka, which is cream, slowly oven baked in a clay pot.
Ready-prepared food is the Ukrainian answer to McDonaldâs, and delicatessen departments selling home-style salads, pickles, fried fish, baked meats, and pies are very popular.
