Once in the fort, he had met a Tuscarora woman who worked at cooking for the soldiers. She was standing under a brush arbor, hanging fresh ducks amid other seasoning game. Claw watched her motions, which were fluid and graceful. Her hair was glossy in the sunlight, and her face was without scars and fair to look upon.

“What are you called?” he asked as he moved toward her, but her eyes grew large at the sight of him, and her actions lost all rhythm.

“You are the Claw?”

He could see she was frightened, and when he opened his arms, his hands empty and fingers outspread to show he meant no harm, she spoke something in her language, and he could read the tone, which was terror, and she was backing away, almost stumbling. She had no more wish to know him than the children of years ago in the village near his parents’ cabin. If anything had changed, it was the fear in her voice, but that at least was something. That, he thought, was what he could claim.
