U136 and Heinrich Zimmermann

U136’s second patrol between March and May 1942 took her to the eastern seaboard of the United States where three merchantmen were sunk and a large tanker damaged. Zimmermann’s promising career came to an end on his third patrol while U136 was operating as part of the Hai group north-west of the Canaries. On 11 July 1942 U136 was located while moving in to engage ships bound for South America once convoy OS33 had dispersed, being quickly sunk in a combined attack by HMSs Pelican and Spey and the destroyer Lé opard of the Free French navy. There were no survivors.
