15. (above) A page from The Guardian showing a group of related items; (facing page) the main story presented as a single web page.

The web page is by comparison a poor affair. Waller points out that only one story is presented, stripped of the statistical charts; only the glossary remains. The connected stories have disappeared; while they are elsewhere on the website, there are no direct links to them. There is no image to give immediacy and appeal to the article. The items in the two right-hand columns are supposedly related, but most of them are generic links to other economics or politics stories, or advertisements (these are likely to have been created dynamically at the point of access). There are many more distractions and diversions for the reader on the web page than the single advertisement on the printed page. In terms of multimodality, options for readers, and its ability to signal the importance of the topic and the newspaper’s editorial stance, the printed page is much richer.
