The three squadrons at Holmesley South, 174, 175 and 245, moved to France in late June – to B5 (Camilly), having operated to and fro since D-Day. They had previously lost most of their ground crews but were re-united with them in the beach-head.

Our ground crews were moved to their assembly areas prior to embarkation for the Continent. The men who replaced them were from a variety of services including the Fleet Air Arm. Unfortunately they had little knowledge of Typhoons and it was absolutely nerve-racking at start-up time for an op, not knowing whether anyone would get you going if you failed with the cartridge start – as there was no chance of them re-loading the starting cartridges.

After carrying out a number of ops from the south of England we landed in Normandy – B5 – one of the British airstrips which had been bulldozed out of the ripening wheat fields. It was re-assuring to meet up with our own ground crews and have them back on the job.

Pilot Officer T.T. Hall, 175 Squadron
