Chapter Ten

The Chamber of Sentries and Warriors was located within walking distance of the Court, its simplistic sandstone structure a stark contrast to the more ostentatiously designed edifice that housed the offices of Bhesar’s leading intellectuals. Tall sentries stood at the entrance, unmoving except to give a full salute to the Director as he ushered the four students through the doors. He replied with a brief salute of his own, acknowledging his subordinates.

They walked into a large open courtyard, which was filled with sentries and warriors warming up for their morning training. One burly sentry grabbed the collar of a warrior and threw him over his head, causing the warrior to land on the ground with a sickening thud. Brianna winced and quickened her step. If this was warming up, she did not want to stay around to see what actual training entailed.

Sentries and warriors were differentiated by the small yet prominent insignias sewn onto their right shoulders. Sentries were represented by the Bienmal, a fierce black wolf native to the Bhesar region and noted for its loyalty and keen night vision. Warriors were represented by the Pankiron, a mythological feline said to be able to camouflage at will and predict where its prey would be before it was even there. These were proud men and women who devoted their lives to serving and protecting their community. So far, no other distant community had a chamber of fighters as skilled as theirs.

Brianna followed her group through another entrance, which led to a spacious foyer. The Director turned aside to speak to a man sitting behind an ornate desk made of rosewood. After a few minutes, he returned to the students with four cards that dangled from thin metal chains. On them were inscribed their names, positions, and codes. They were now officially authorized to enter the Chamber.

The Director took them underground, to the dormitories on the first floor. They walked past the kitchen and washroom facilities before reaching a set of doors along the corridor. “Male” and “Female” signs hung on the lintel, above the wooden doors.

“I’ll come for you in the afternoon. Meanwhile, settle in, wash, or visit the cafeterias on the second floor aboveground if you’re hungry,” said the Director.

“Can we join you for lunch, Father?” asked Wen as he shifted the weight of his bag to his other shoulder.

The Director shook his head. “Not today. There is much to do, and I will not be free then. But I’ll come for you later.” His expression turned grim. “We must discuss what happened at Miwan Hill, away from prying eyes and mind readers.” And with that, he strode toward the stairs to return to the courtyard.

Eugene turned to face Ruben. “What are your plans? Will you stay at the Chamber for a while?”

He shook his head. “I will be returning home tonight. Until my parents arrange a temporary position for me at the Court, I will have no other alternative but to remain at home.”

“Why can’t you stay here until everything is arranged?” asked Brianna.
