“You two wait outside.” Ella insisted when they arrived at the hospital room. Ty’s jaw muscles popped as he pressed his clenched his fists tightly to his sides. But he stayed.

Something tightened in Ella’s chest as soon as she walked into the room. The beep of the heart monitor. The gush of the oxygen machine. The urine bag hanging on the side of the bed. Mrs. McKnight looked tiny and meek in her hospital bed. Tubes ran in and out of her body. She dreaded what this might mean for Algernon.

“Son? Maurice?” Mrs. McKnight pulled off her oxygen mask and smiled when she saw Algernon standing at the foot of her bed. “So glad you’re here.”

“No Grandma Dee, it’s me, Algernon. Remember?” He said gently.

“Grandson?”

“Amelie’s son, Algernon, remember?

“Algernon? Lord, forgive me. I guess I was dreaming. Boy, you gave me such a worry. Where have you been? When are you coming home? I need some help around the house. Algernon had made little progress in their sessions, but he looked up at her with a face so full of woe, her heart ached. She took a Kleenex out of her purse to blow her nose. “He’s making some progress, Mrs. McKnight.”

“I’ll be home soon, Grandma Dee. I promise. I made a bad mistake and I’m so sorry. I’ll never let you down again.” He laid his head next to hers and sniffled as Mrs. McKnight fell back into slumbers. Whenever she startled awake, Algernon stroked her thin, bony hand and spoke to her tenderly, soothing her back to rest.

After she’d been asleep a while, he wiped his eyes on the corner of the sheet, stood and stretched his arms and back.

“Do you want to get some coffee while we wait for the doctor to arrive? They said it might be awhile?” Ella asked.

“Yes, definitely.” Algernon kissed his grandmother on the forehead.

“We’re going down and get a cup of coffee.”

“You can’t go without an escort,” said Ty.

Ella smiled broadly. “I appreciate the offer. But you boys look like you could use a break. I got this,” she said as the elevator doors closed on their surprised faces. Now she felt smug. She was learning a few tricks from her new culture. A little “good” in
