The next day, the members of the commune gathered again on street in front of the commune to prepare something resembling breakfast. Addison and Scott had gone in search of wood, and Esther was stirring a pot of porridge. They also had bread and a little over-boiled coffee. The army came around with allotments of water for everyone, enough to cook with and to drink.
“We’re going back to City hospital,” Esther said, dishing up hot cereal. “What do you say, Norah? Are you able?”
“Yes. I’d like to, very much.” Norah glanced at Abby, who was expressionless. Norah wanted to ask her what she was planning to do, but she wished Abby to tell her so she didn’t have to ask.
“I’m going to try once again to get home. I’ll try a different route,” Abby said.
Norah wanted to shout at her not to go, that it was too dangerous.
The soldiers had brought them news as well as water. The fire was still advancing, and General Funston was calling for more dynamite. Mayor Schmitz said civilians were to stay at their homes and follow orders. Period.
Norah pulled Abby aside, out of earshot of the others. “You cannot get to Russian Hill! You heard the army man, didn’t you?” she asked, sharply.
Abby didn’t say anything. She clearly wasn’t used to depending upon others or to listening to them either.
Norah’s anger boiled over. “You are impossible! Why in the world are you so intent on risking your life? Why can’t you just wait until we get word that it’s safe?”
Abby blinked at her, and to Norah’s great dismay, she began to cry. “I know you don’t understand, Norah. I’m not sure I can make you understand, though I’m sorry to distress you. I should go.”
She made as if to turn away and Norah grabbed her arm. “Please don’t.” She watched Abby’s face.
“All right. I won’t try again. It seems futile anyhow. I’ll head over to Golden Gate Park.”
“Oh no, you mustn’t. You need not do that. You can stay here,” Norah said, aware that her voice was squeaky and pleading.
“I must do something today. I can’t just rest here. I’ll go crazy.”
Norah wracked her brain for something to say. “You and Scott should go look for something for us to eat. There are grocers up and down the street, and they may be open since we’ve not experienced much damage in the Western Addition.”
“I suppose.” Abby looked uncertain.
Norah wanted to shake her, but she was grateful that at least Abby had given up on the idea of going back downtown.
