Marijuana Wars

Ihad never seen anyone use marijuana out in the field, and it would be hard not to notice anything being done in the field. Except for the two-man reconnaissance patrols that were sent out late each afternoon to locate an ambush site, nobody was out of sight of everyone for more than a moment or two at a time. That left two groups. Some would get back to Binh Phuoc and disappear until it was time to head out the next day. Never particularly large in number, they were essentially fighting the war with the equivalent of a constant hangover. The other group was made up of those who sought a little assistance in coming down after a mission. It was not a priority with them, and if they missed a stand down or two, it did not really matter. These together constituted about a third of the platoon. The majority of the platoon was the “never had” and the “had once or twice, but were finished with it, and did not intend to try again.” I was in the latter of these two groups.

And there were reasons to believe that the use was not one-sided. Reasons like the marijuana patches found growing in NVA-controlled areas or the reports of long-range reconnaissance patrols that observed small groups of NVA soldiers smoking during their off time.

The track mechanic who went into field with us had been given a name by Doug. He was Mechanic, pronounced as if there was a four-letter first syllable and a one-letter second syllable: MECH-a-NIC. He was responsible for my first and only pot use. He had been pushing me to give it a try. War is an occasion where the “you may never get another chance” argument seems particularly compelling. I yielded.
