Chapter 4

Lincoln poked his head out of the shower. “Are you expecting someone?” The knocking from out front got louder, and then a buzzing sounded from around the corner in the kitchen. “I hear someone at your door again, and think your phone’s also ringing. Guess you’re a popular guy.”

“Not to paint myself in an unflattering light...” Gabe came out of the bedroom with a towel around his waist and handed one over to Lincoln. “Hardly anyone contacts me now that Bren and I called it quits, except my dad when he needs money.”

Lincoln frowned and took the towel, heading into the kitchen. Gabe had gone there to grab his phone.

“Hey, man, you alright? You look like someone insulted your puppy.” Lincoln leaned carefully on the cheap Formica counter, debating whether he should make some supportive gesture, or offer to answer the door, or what. He didn’t know Gabe well enough to know what to do in these situations, but he caught himself trying to figure out the answer all the same.

“It’s Chelle, Brendan’s girl. She sent a couple of texts saying he’s looking for me. I’m guessing that’s him.” Gabe jerked his head toward the front door.

Unexpected feelings of protectiveness crept across Lincoln’s shoulders, stealing up his neck and winding down his spine. “This is the guy from downstairs again?”

“Yeppers.” A shrug followed Gabe’s response. He sailed his phone across the small apartment to the sofa. He pulled open a cabinet as he looked over to Lincoln. “Sorry. I know you probably wanna take off but he’ll go away if we ignore him. I can make something to eat while we wait.”

“No. You shouldn’t have to hide out in your own home.” Lincoln headed toward the door. “He give you trouble like this before?”

Gabe pulled a box of pasta from the cabinet. “Not really. He used to be quiet. Easy going, you know. I knew him from school back home, and we started fooling around when we were studying for a test in high school. We stopped for awhile when he got uncomfortable, then it got serious again after we moved off campus and got an apartment together. He was a great friend, so I figured it’d stay that way even after the rest didn’t work. Recently he got weirder.”

The pounding on the door grew louder. Lincoln’s jaw clenched.

Gabe glanced toward the door, but then pulled out a pot to boil water. “Listen, beginning of last school year I decided to nut up and cop to being gay. Told Bren I wanted to stop pretending we were only buddies who fucked around once in a while. He started partying more and decided he wanted Chelle.” Gabe gestured toward the door. “This shit right here, I don’t understand. He’s been wanting me to hang with the two of them more, and I won’t sit around watching him hold hands with his girl. I’m done. He doesn’t wanna be with me, fine. Then he needs to call it a day and leave me alone.
