WITH his back to his homeland, Igashu looked down upon a very different terrain. Unlike the valley of the white swans, this alien land lacked the broad prairies and flat mesas he was used to. Here, fast running rivers sliced through steep mountains. The area was heavily forested, whereas the deep forests in Igashu’s valley hugged the mountain foothills and lakesides.

Igashu stood at a bend in a river. He knelt to examine the mountain lion’s track. The front paw prints were deeper than the rear, and they were fresh. He drank here, and he’s not far away.

A sound he hadn’t expected jolted Igashu. He pulled back under the riverbank’s thick vegetation and listened. The sound of horses silenced an argument two squirrels were having over some chokecherries. Two men on horseback passed close by. White men!

His mind raced with the possibilities. Keeping well out of sight, he began to follow the horsemen. He needed to find out, if he could, what these men were doing here.

Igashu forgot all about the puma. The puma had not forgotten about Igashu.
