Twenty-Five

“Who are you?” Sarah hissed, her crest feather flipping around and bowing.

I looked down at what I was wearing. The work crew overalls weren’t that much of a disguise. “What do you mean?” I glanced around the little park area where I had left her. There was another couple on the far side of the little meditation fountain, but they were way into each other and not us.

And I mean WAY into each other, like get a room people kind of into each other. It made my head dip and nostrils flare in embarrassment just looking at them. And it was still early in the first period. I mean, this was the Grays. They might not be on Station time but still, a little self control.

I offered her the little bundle that had work crew overalls for her, too. “Here, put this on.” The pedestrian park was right off a pedestrian walk. It was off the beaten path, but someone might come by any second.

“You’ve been gone for what, twenty minutes? And you come back with,” she took the bundle, “official uniforms and…” She held up the portal I had already given her. “Work orders and… and.” She pointed at the toolbox I had set down on the bench.

She was saying all that like it was a bad thing. I think twenty minutes was a pretty good time. Not my personal best, but in any hunt there’s luck involved.

“How did you do all that?” She gave the couple on the other side of the park a glance. Her eyes got big and she looked away.

“Network crawler on leave,” I explained.

Confident that no one was paying us any attention, she flipped open the bundle and slid a leg into the overalls. “How can you set up a major,” she cast her voice down to a whisper, “criminal enterprise,” then in a little higher register, “in twenty minutes?”

Okay, now she thought I was being too fast? And said it like it was a bad thing? Wellie girls are weird. Gorgeous, with beguiling eyes and a crest feather that made my fourth heart skip a beat with every twitch, but weird. “Well, the trick is to hit the hydraulic maintenance crawlers.” Maybe that would answer her question. “Especially the old timers, they know to keep a stash of spare clothes in case they get dowsed.” Everybody knew that, though. I wasn’t giving away any trade secrets.

“And this?” she accused me with the portal she waved in my face.

“I took it off the same guys.” Really one stop shopping. “Sliced it open and changed the address on their work order. It won’t hold up if anyone checks, but who tries to break into Sector?”

She finished fastening the overalls. She looked as much like a squib maintenance technician as I looked like the emperor’s concubine. But it was what we had, so it would have to do. “Perfect,” I exaggerated with puffed out facial feathers.

She showed just a point of her fangs. “I look ridiculous.”
