Nina didn’t call me back until Whitney and I were driving over to the Capitol Building for our two o’clock tour.

Since I’d already told Whitney about asking Nina to get me the names of the senators on the committee, the moment I hung up, Whitney asked, “Well, what did Nina say?”

“Senator Jackson is a member of the Senate committee that provides oversight to the FDA, and according to the transcripts of the hearing, he was adamant about preventing Metrovir from receiving FDA approval. He was also the senator who insisted it be delayed for at least a year.”

“So your hunch was right. Now you know why Dixon doesn’t have good things to say about Senator Jackson.”

“He obviously holds him responsible for the money he lost when Metrovir didn’t get approved.”

I pulled into a parking space and turned off the engine. As soon as I removed the keys, Whitney reached over and squeezed my hand. “So tell me what you’re thinking. Why do you look so worried?”

I shook my head. “I may be way off base with this, but after studying this guy for a couple of days and seeing how he operates, I’m asking myself if he deliberately decided to hurt Senator Jackson by going after his daughter.”

“What do you mean by going after his daughter? Didn’t you say Dixon’s about to ask Lily to marry him?”

“That’s what Senator Jackson thinks, and Nina told me Dixon recently purchased an engagement ring—don’t ask me how she knows that—but maybe that’s how he’ll get back at the senator. Maybe he’s planning to leave Lily at the altar, or dump her a few days before the wedding, or sabotage her life in some other way.”

“He wouldn’t harm her physically, would he?”

“That’s a good question.”

I sat there and looked out the window for a moment. Finally, I shook my head and said, “It’s a good question, but I can’t answer it.”

“Really? That’s a little scary.”

“You’re right, it is scary, but I’m not sure what to do about it.”

“Should you contact Senator Jackson and let him know what you’ve discovered about Dixon so far?”

“There’s not much point in doing that. I don’t believe I’ve discovered anything about Dixon the Senator doesn’t already know.”

“You haven’t said much about Lily. How does she relate to Dixon? Does she seem to be afraid of him at all?”

“No, I wouldn’t say she’s afraid of him, and she doesn’t seem bothered by the way he speaks to her, but her father has a tendency to bark at people too, so that’s probably understandable.”

We were both quiet as I continued thinking about Lily. After a moment or two, I added, “Lily did seem a little miffed at Dixon for forgetting what time her seminar started, and then just before her seminar, she asked me not to tell Dixon she was cutting back on—”

When I stopped in midsentence and didn’t say anything for several seconds, Whitney asked, “What did she tell you not to tell Dixon?”

I bowed my head a second, and then I looked over at her.
