Chapter Sixteen – Arkansas

Oleg remained with the plane and luggage while Titus and Wynter embraced a chubby, short man whom Oleg had never met, but knew to be Arlin Skokes. It was a bittersweet homecoming. From past conversations, Oleg knew Rudy's death was hitting Titus harder than even Wynter knew. Throughout their missions, Oleg had prayed often with Titus about his family, as to how God would bring about reconciliation. Now, Rudy had died without knowing Titus was a child of God. He'd died without the opportunity for Titus to repair the injuries from the past.

As Oleg finished unloading the plane—a jet they used for trans-Atlantic flights while the Navajo remained in Paris—his sat-phone rang. He set a duffel bag of civilian clothes on the tarmac and answered his phone. It was Corban Dowler.

"How're things in Arkansas?" the COIL founder asked. "I'd come to the funeral, but I'm up to my neck in something."

"We just arrived." Oleg watched Titus, Wynter, and Arlin Skokes walk arm in arm toward a waiting suburban. "As Titus would say, sometimes it ain't easy coming home."

"How are you holding up, Oleg?"

"Well, our unscheduled trip to Arkansas is a welcomed rest. Syria was a real challenge. I thought I was about finished on that one."

"It'll get worse for Christians before Christ Himself restores order in this fallen world."

"Without you and Titus, I'd still be on the other side of the issue." Oleg sighed. "Tired or not, I'll be ready for whatever COIL needs me to respond to. For now, that seems to be luggage porter for Titus."

"Well, I hate to do this to you and Titus, but he's going to have to see to his own luggage, Oleg. I need you in Washington on the next plane. Your Interpol experience will be invaluable as we wade through this thing."

"What exactly are you talking about?" Oleg waved at Titus who was signaling to him that it was time to leave.

"Seems Wynter has pushed the Caspertein name into the minds of some powerful people. I'm talking White House powerful."

"That's good, isn't it?" Oleg sensed a ray of hope for Wynter's situation. "If the president is behind her—"

"No, it's the other way around. Azerbaijan is crying foul. They want the US to extradite Wynter so she can answer to murder charges. They're insisting on it. Now that Titus is involved, his own checkered past is under the microscope. All of COIL is under the squeeze of the State Department."

"They can't be serious!" Oleg dismissed Titus with another wave as he called him to get a move on. "They'd never send Wynter back to Azerbaijan, would they?"

"That's what they're proposing. Relations with Muslim-dominant countries are on the rise, Oleg. It's right out of the Bible—nations uniting over evil for a final purpose."

"Titus'll never allow it. I pity those who go up against him."

"Well, Titus doesn't need this on his mind right now. I'm sorry, Oleg. You two are partners, but maybe let him grieve for his brother for now. He doesn't need to hear about this quite yet.
