Chapter 23

After a fruitless meeting with the pastor of the Unity Center of Peace, Pete and his daughter stood in the parking lot next to her car. The New Age church was no more than a rented space in a strip mall, right next to the empty shell of an old out-of-business Kmart. The pastor had agreed to meet them there before the Wednesday evening service.

“Well, that was a waste of time,” Pete said. “I thought they were the weird ones. They acted like we were the ones out of our minds.”

“You feel like driving up to Phoenix?” she said, looking at the list of churches the pastor had recommended.

Pete didn’t relish the long drive with such slim odds of a payoff. “Two hours there, two hours back? I doubt it would pan out. These guys we’re looking for aren’t mainstream. They don’t advertise in the Yellow Pages.”

“Maybe not,” she said. “But it’s worth a few long-distance calls. I’ve got a copy of the Phoenix phone book at home. I’ll look up the numbers and make some calls. What I can’t find in the book, I can get from the operator.”

Suddenly, a faint ringing sound chimed from nowhere. It rang again, and Pete searched for the source.

“Oh, that’s my new phone!” She reached into her purse. “My first call ever!”

“Your phone?”

She pulled a small black device from her purse. “Yeah, Ernesto bought this for me. It just came out. It’s called a Motorola Micro TAC. Cost three thousand bucks, but look, the battery is so small you don’t need to carry that heavy bag around.”

“I’ll be danged,” Pete said. “What’ll they come up with next?”

The phone rang again.

“Well, answer the thing.”

She extended the black antenna and flipped open a lid that seemed to be the mouthpiece. “Hello?” she practically yelled into the phone. “Can you hear me?”

Pete could hear a voice coming from the phone but couldn’t make out the words.

“Hey, Ernesto. Yeah, it really works. It’s awesome. So what’s up?” She listened for a moment, then made a horrified face. “When? Is he calling back?” She listened for a few seconds and said, “Can you send Skip down to pick us up? We need to be there when he calls again.” She nodded her head as she listened. “Okay, great. I’ll tell him. See you soon.” She flipped the lid shut.

“Tell me what?” Pete asked.

“Ernesto got this crazy call.”

“About what?”

“Some guy who wants to borrow the Shroud.”

“It must be the same guy on Kevin’s tape.”

“I don’t know. Probably. We’ll bring the tape with us and see if the voices match.”
