Chapter 17

Darcy jerked her head in Barry’s direction as soon as he burst through the door. He didn’t stop to greet her, but simply strode forward towards Principal Greenwood’s office.

“Sir. Sir! What do you doing?! You can’t go insi—”

Barry ignored Darcy as he barged into the principal’s office and slammed the door shut behind him. Greenwood was seated behind his desk with a stack of papers in front of him. When he saw the door open, he sat upright and raised his eyebrows.

“Detective Torres,” he said with a hint of annoyance in his timbre. “You could have knocked first.”

The door behind Barry opened a moment later, and Darcy poked her head inside, complaining in a petulant tone.

“Principal Greenwood, I tried to stop him!” she defended herself. “He entered without asking! Do you want me to call the police?”

“It’s alright, Darcy. No need to involve the police. Yet,” Greenwood said scornfully while staring at Barry.

“I’ll be outside if you need anything, sir,” Darcy said in a calmer tone now.

It took a few seconds for Barry to hear the door closing again. Once there was silence and the two men were alone in the office, Greenwood gently lowered the pen on the desk and intertwined his fingers.

“You look like you’re in a rush, detective. I want to assure you that I’m as busy as you are, so please, allow me to help you so we can both get back to work,” he freed his hand to gesture to the seat in front before entangling his fingers once more.

Barry sauntered to the desk and pulled the chair out, not bothering to lift it. The legs produced a muffled scraping sound against the carpet. Barry slumped into the chair and casually raised his foot on top of the other leg’s knee.

“You can start by telling me everything you did last Thursday while you were in school. But this time, try not to leave out any details,” Barry said.

Greenwood flashed Barry a PR grin and said, “We already went through this, detective. I told you everything that you needed to know. Now, do you have any additional questions, or..?”

“You said that you never left your office Thursday until it was time to go home, is that correct?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure you didn’t go out anywhere during your working hours, Mr. Principal?”

Greenwood pursed his lips and started fiddling with his fingers.

“I may have gone out to use the bathroom at some point.”

“Not downstairs to talk to the janitor, right?”

Greenwood’s fingers froze for a brief moment. It would have been easy to miss, but Barry was good at noticing these sorts of details.

“Now that I remember it, yeah, I went downstairs to give him some tasks,” Greenwood said.

“What kind of tasks?”

“Sweeping the schoolyard.”

Bull-fucking-shit.

Barry put his leg down and raised a forefinger to his mouth. He stared at the principal for a prolonged moment. He already knew what he was going to question him about, but he wanted to put more silent pressure on him to see if he would break on his own.
