Yours ever,

Isaac Aden Robards

Aden had to write close to the edges of his few sheets of paper to get his last comments on. Then he thoughtfully reread the letter. He hung his head. It wasn’t right to send such a gloomy letter to Mother. He scooted closer to the fire and held the pages out toward the flame, then finally folded them, making precise, neat creases, and stuffed the missive into his shirt pocket. He’d have to purchase an envelope and stamp in town. He stirred the fire and rose to get water for making coffee. Somehow he felt better, more cheerful, and even began to whistle as he ambled toward the creek.

Rebekah, still in the wagon, heard Aden’s whistling and felt a degree of tenseness ease away from her neck. If he was whistling again, maybe he at least was feeling better. She had to admit she’d missed his whistling. She began to brush her hair, preparing to braid it. It was going to be a warm day. She’d wear the blue cotton dress Mother had made for her before she got sick. It had a full skirt, buttons from throat to waist, with narrow ruffles around the neck and short sleeves. Libby Stokes was coming today to have some crowding teeth pulled. She was thirteen and had been so friendly when she and her father came to see Dr. Robards the other day. Rebekah had assured her the pain wouldn’t be too awful and she’d be so proud of her pretty smile later. Libby had liked that blue dress, so she thought she’d wear it again just for her. Maybe it will even cheer me a little. She couldn’t understand how very depressed she’d been for these weeks since she sold Banner. It was as if something very important died that day. But what? She hadn’t had anything, so how could it die? Well, of course she missed Banner.

She’d worried for awhile that she might run into that funny little wrinkled liveryman someday, but it hadn’t happened. As much as she would like to have dropped by to see if Banner were still there, she didn’t dare renew acquaintance with that man. She didn’t want Aden to talk to him ever. As angry as Aden had been over what he had learned, how much more irate he would be if he knew the whole truth! Well, she was glad her hand had healed quickly and she was able to work as hard as ever. No one could say she didn’t keep everything in their dental corner swept and scrubbed to a high shine.

That was the day they began to talk again, but with a cool reserve, Rebekah thought. She missed the old Aden. But this was safer, much safer, so she wouldn’t complain even to herself. And she’d gotten used to Forsyth, actually enjoyed seeing familiar faces on the street. Her homesickness had worn off a lot because now, she told herself, she was making progress toward going home.
