1. Right diagonal pair bearing weight whilst the left one is in flight: the right lateral pair closes whereas the left one opens. This is the ideal phase for the “costal flexion” theory: the rider maintains the bend to the right, the torso is pushed to the left and the dorso-lumbar segment is bent very slightly to the right. The right haunch drops. But this is only a snapshot of half of the stride taken at the most favourable moment.

We can look at what happens next.

At walk and trot, the horse’s locomotion resembles a fish swimming, whereas at canter it resembles a dolphin swimming.
