Chapter Sixteen

The forest was darker and more claustrophobic than I expected, as the trees and bushes almost seemed to close around me.

Thankfully, I still had access to my wolf’s enhanced vision, and that, coupled with my strength, made traversing the forest easier than if I’d been a human. That didn’t mean it wasn’t difficult and because of how tight and overgrown it was, the going was slow.

As I picked my way further into the forest, I half expected there to be alarm bells or something to alert Silas that I’d left Harrow. But there was nothing, not even the telltale tingle of magic. Maybe he’d never know that I’d left and I could come back triumphantly with the creature.

Or I’d die in this forest and no one would know.

On that cheery thought, I delved deeper into the forest. The tugging in my chest that had been present this entire time disappeared. Almost like someone or something had just cut it off, leaving me alone in the dark forest. Did the creature no longer want to be found? Had I risked Silas’ fury for nothing?

Fuck. Okay, don’t panic, I told myself as I glanced around in the darkness. All I had to do was follow my trail and go back the way I came. Easy enough and Silas would never know that I left Harrow.

I turned, wincing as a stray branch sliced the skin on my cheek. There was a flash of pain and warm liquid trickled down my face, but my healing quickly kicked in and the cut and pain was gone. As I wiped away the remaining blood, a deep growl rumbled through the forest.

My heart seized, and I stopped dead in my tracks. What the fuck had that been? I strained my eyes and ears for movement, hoping maybe that it had just been my imagination.

There was another growl, closer this time.

My breath caught in my throat, and my stomach clenched with dread. That definitely hadn’t been my imagination.

Twigs snapped to my left.

I swung my gaze in that direction, my body tense and ready to pounce into action. That was either some entirely new creature, Silas, or the escaped creature I’d been out here hunting for. I wasn’t sure which one I preferred since all of them had the potential to end my life right here, right now.

More twigs snapped, closer this time, followed by another growl.

Adrenaline surged through the system as I spotted something sleek and black slinking through the bushes. Unless Silas could shapeshift, which I doubted, that wasn’t him. Which left it being either the creature I wanted to find, or something else entirely.

I swallowed hard as my eyes followed the creature. From what little I could see of it, it was huge, at least the size of a pony, and moved almost like a panther. I’d never heard of species like me that had different animals, so this had to be a wild creature.

One green eye flashed in the darkness, followed by another.

“I know you’re out there,” I said, hoping maybe the creature had some intelligence.
