AERIS JUMPED TO the left to avoid being struck, but it caught her in the shoulder and sent her flying to the ground. Semira threw her head back and cackled. The pup used this to his advantage and wriggled free from her while she was distracted.

Smoke filled the air around us, making it hard to breathe. I closed my eyes and thought about the rain like I had done with Samuel. If I could make it rain inside the dome she’d created, maybe it would make the smoke dissipate. I thought about the tin roof and how the sound of the drops would lull me to sleep at night.

“Stop that!” Semira spat and stomped over to me, wrapping her hand around my throat. “If you think you can fight me, then say so.” Her fingers squeezed tighter.

Panic shot through me, my heart felt as if it was going to explode, and my lungs burned for air. A few gasping noises came out of my mouth when I tried to speak, and the world around me began to blur. I tried to claw her fingers off, but she was stronger.

From out of nowhere, a deafening blast echoed around me, as if lightning had struck beside my feet. I wasn’t sure if it was the lack of oxygen, or the noise, but my hearing was slowly fading along with my vision.

Just as quickly as Semira had grabbed me, she let go and disappeared. I fell to the ground with my mouth open, sucking in as much air as I could manage. Tears poured from my eyes, I felt as if I was going to throw up, and my head throbbed. I wanted to check on Aeris and the pup, but my body was too weak to move. I had to fight. I couldn’t give up, not after coming that far. I took one last deep breath and pushed myself off the forest floor.

My balance was off, and I stumbled to the side, right into something—or someone—very large. I let out a hoarse scream and tried to run in the other direction, but I was caught. A large furry paw wrapped around me and pulled me in close. I pounded at it with my fists until I heard the sound of whooshing wind.

I turned to see the golden fur of the black winged lion. “Samuel?”

“Looked like you two needed some help, and I happened to be flying over.” He winked and pulled me in tight with his paws around my back.

“Where is Aeris?” Worry filled my heart as I remembered seeing her lying on the ground. I pushed off Samuel and went to where she had been, but she wasn’t there.

“I love how much you care, my dear,” Aeris said from behind me. “Makes me think you may actually like me or something.”

“Don’t scare me like that!” I said as I ran to her and threw my arms around her.

“Thank you, Samuel,” Aeris said as she ran a hand over my head. “I could have taken her though.
