At sixteen, my father decides I’m to be an obedient trinket and nothing more, a weapon to parade around in front of his court as bait. The most horrible scum come to lay their eyes upon me, to undress me with their gaze, to dare to touch me. Many of them leave without the limbs they dare to touch me with. Still, they all flock to my father’s kingdom to play to his sense of power and ask for my hand in marriage. I refuse, over and over again, and though I’m powerful, I’m nowhere near as powerful as my father.

Oh, how I wish I was.

“You’ll stand before the court and play the part,” my father commands, a lecture of my role. “You’ll wear the dress that reveals your bosom and tempt them into sin.”

I grimace before glaring at my father. “I’m not some harlot to parade like an apple for your pigs to eat.”

“You are my daughter, and therefore, you will do what I say,” he growls, and I know I’m playing with fire.

Snarling at him, I say, “I will not. I am not your slave, father.”

The savage look in his eyes as he looks at me makes my blood turn to ice. My power flares in warning, preparing for a fight.

“No?” he says, deadly calm.

“No,” I repeat, my face as cold as his. I’m done being his plaything. I’ll no longer be his weapon.

He raises his hand, and the doors open behind us, as if he’s been waiting for this moment and the guards who come inside were just listening for the signal. But what was the signal? His question or my answer?

The guards lead in Georgina, the nanny who spent years raising me when my father refused to. She’s old and grey now, certainly no threat. Her eyes go to me, and I see understanding there.

“No,” I say, this time horrified rather than defiant.

“You dare to deny me my right as your father,” he says, staring at me coldly. “So, now, you will lose something dear to you.”

“Don’t,” I beg. “Georgina has done nothing wrong. She’s no threat to—”

“She is not the threat,” he agrees, his eyes on me. “But you are, Rapunzel, and no daughter of mine will defy me.”

Georgina stands tall and proud before us, surrounded by guards, and I rush toward her, knowing I can take out the guards around her and save her from them. But I’ve forgotten my father.

Magic wraps around me, freezing me where I stand, taking my control away from me.

“Watch,” he orders, as if I can close my eyes, as if I can stop this from happening.

Georgina meets my eyes. “It’s okay, child. I knew my fate long ago.”

“No,” I rasp, fighting hard against my father’s powers. My pinky twitches but I do not move.

“Stay true to who you are,” she tells me just before the guard raises his sword and brings it down.

The tears spill over my lashes as Georgina collapses to the ground, blood gushing from the fatal wound.
