CHAPTER 19

I’ve traveled through a portal before, but it was made by Puca. This is much different. Icy fire engulfs my form, opening my mouth as if to scream, only instead, it allows the magic to flow down my throat and into my belly. I try to squeeze my eyes closed, but the magic of the portal forces them open.

An ocean of night flows past me as I ride on a river of stars. The universe is specked with dappled lights. They wink at me in a myriad of colors. I pass through colored smoke clouds sprinkled with small suns, but the burning that usually comes from that light never reaches me. Then, all at once, I lay on the ground, having a taste of dirt on my tongue and grit between my teeth.

I roll over and cough out the bits of bramble from my mouth. Running my hand over my form, I find my water sack, but it hangs flat and empty. It was half full before the stones.

My skin is pink with burns and my ears ache. I run my finger over the tip of my ears. They come away wet with blood. I flick the blood drop to the side and a mushroom sprouts where it lands, growing to the size of a citrus fruit.

I hum to remove the grime from my hair and person, then pull the straps of the bags off and stand to take in my surroundings. The stone circle behind me is set into the crevasse of a ravine. There is a stone path leading away from it in each possible direction. The air is frigid with cold. My breath puffs out in smoky clouds and it tastes of snow and ice. Though there is no snow on the ground, I feel sure there will be soon.

I turn to examine the circle. The shimmering pool of magic no longer fills the center and I can see right through to the other side. The pathway over there splits, making a circle in the ground. In the center is a statue of Wyld. I hiss when my eyes reach it.

Why do humans’ worship what they don't understand?

I quickly move to the blasphemous effigy and with a burst of whistling I push it off its pedestal, then smile in satisfaction as the statue of Wyld Puca smashes into a hundred pieces.

The magic wakes in the area are unchanged and move in the slow, syrupy fashion of the human world. Everything here moves slowly, but this is my new life. I bite back my feelings and instead remember that I chose this, that I chose Arthur. With those thoughts in mind, my cheeks curl into a sneering smile.

I scour the area on either side of the stones, searching for the anchor.

It must be close. Puca wouldn't leave that to chance.

I hum to turn over soil and stone, leaving nothing intact, including the circle I came through. It has served its purpose and the anchor is all I need to open a new portal.
