India’s population of 1.1 billions is a positive as well as a negative factor just as it is in case of China. It is a very challenging task to raise the standard of living for the common man. It is a safe bet that the GDP figures will continue to rise along with per capita income. However, it seems an impossible task for these two countries to compare favorably with any of the Western European countries in terms of overall prosperity. Poverty, malnourishment, and ill health will continue to thrive there for the foreseeable future. After independence in 1947, the Indian Government had been following more or less an independent policy, leaning mostly towards left. However, 1991 brought a radical change; after the disintegration of USSR, India started moving towards the practice of the free economics. The result was phenomenal; the GNP started climbing at a rate of almost ten percent per year. Finally, India’s economy took a positive turn.
