A woman returned from her night shift only to find a big-ass crab sitting in the middle of her bed. A man visited his kitchen for a midnight snack and saw a hand-sized crab holding a polished knife. A girl went to the toilet, and a coin-holding crab snuck into the room with her. A boy woke up with an enormous crustacean sitting on his chest, staring him down with its pincers clicking ominously.

From every corner of the city, terrified screams echoed in the night, spreading like wildfire as one scream spurred many others. Soon, most of the town was up. Those who hadn’t yet been visited by the crab-shaped, reverse Santa Clauses were confused at the incoherent shouts they were hearing, but that was only until crabs erupted out of their own toilet bowls, too!

People were in the streets as their houses were getting raided, the night’s silence now replaced with an incredible cacophony of voices. Some chose to stay and guard their belongings, but these were the minority. Against an unknown, terrifying enemy, who would dare stand and fight?

However, even as order was slowly being re-established, things weren’t easy. After the original fear had passed, there were still more problems to be solved.

Shit, thought an adventurer facing a small crowd.

“They took my gold!” yelled a man.

“And my jewels!” screamed a woman.

“And my grandfather’s watch!”

“My prize-winning set of cutlery!”

What do you expect me to do, you assholes, jump in the sewers? I lost my badge, too! the adventurer cursed on the inside but kept a straight face on the outside. He was on duty, after all, and he was responsible for calming these people down. There were others responsible for missing people, diverting the flow of people to other parts of the city, securing houses…

“Don’t worry!” he shouted, stretching his arms out. “In the name of the Adventurer Guild, everything will be retrieved! Just report your losses and calm down!”

A brief moment of silence elapsed before even more people approached him.

“They took around a thousand golden coins,” said the first man.

“And ten diamonds that I had as decoration!” added the woman.

“My grandfather had two watches, now that I think about it. They were both golden, too!”

“Did I say set of cutlery, haha… I meant sets. Three of them!”

“I lost my diamond-embedded sword. You swear that you’ll find them, right? Can I get your name and rank, just for reference?”

The adventurer paled. He should have just jumped in the sewers!

Similar scenes were playing out in many parts of the city, especially near the High District.
