Chapter 17
The Detective
Driving the car to the precinct is the most challenging task I have had in the longest time. My Flower sitting next to me, her hair still wet from the shower she took after me. This morning was unexpected, and I was shocked in the gym at some of her moves but even more perplexed by what proceeded after. We have been sitting in traffic for close to thirty minutes. Diaz and Krane calling me to see where I was. We are very late, the time on the dashboard displaying 10.15am. I struggled to leave the apartment, contemplating calling in sick or saying that I was staying home to help Adira with something. But I need to work, need to find who hurt her.
Chancing a look at my Flower, she is seemingly calm which allows me to mirror with ease, knowing that this morning could have been difficult for her. Her mind must be reeling from everything we did this morning, and I am conscious that I could have triggered her without meaning to.
I have been keeping my tone playful as I have since I got out of the shower the second time. Turning my eyes back to the road I ask, âWhere did you learn those other moves?â She shoots me a shocked expression and instantly I start stumbling over my words, clearly making her think I was talking about the bathroom and bedroom and not the gym.
âNo, I mean when we fought. Not the other thing. Not that you were not good. You were amazing actually! Not actually like it was a shock. You were wonderful and the sounds and how you tasted. Gosh! Just stop me at any moment. Please.â
Laughing she smiles, touching my hand gently, âDiaz and Neilson have been training me on the side while you have been locked away in your office. They have been taking me to the gym after we talk about some hard stuff.â Her eyes are shining, and I make a mental note to thank both detectives for the additional effort they have put into Adiraâs recovery.
Pulling into the precinct carpark close to an hour later than I normally would, I help my Flower out of the car, taking in her warm leggings and knitted black jumper dress. She looks really comfortable which is good because I have to do something tonight that I really do not want to. Something that will keep me away from her.
Walking to the elevator I take her hand, pulling her to be close. Once in the steel box, I turn her to face me, resting my hands just above her hips. âI need to go out tonight.â Her eyes shine up to mine, worry coating them. I have not left her alone since the attempted invasion and I can see the fear that this causes as soon as the words enter the small space. Cupping her face, I try rubbing soothing circles, channelling my calm to her.
âI have asked Annie to come over and bring Chinese.
