This attractive town stands on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos, whose natural harbour made it an important Lycian port. The early residents left behind the impressive rock tombs and sarcophagi for which Fethiye is famous today. Until the late 1970s it was a humble fishing town; then the tourists arrived and development began. With plenty of shops and a mellow nightlife scene, it makes a good base from which to explore nearby attractions such as Kaya Köyü and Ölüdeniz beach.
