Basilica and necropolis

The squat bulk of some second-century AD baths, which were converted two hundred years later into a basilica, is easily distinguishable from the colonnaded street. Closer to the archway, west of the asphalt, stands the elaborate Tomb of Flavius Zeuxis, a prominent Hierapolitan merchant. This counts as the first of more than a thousand tombs of all shapes and sizes which together constitute the necropolis, the largest in Asia Minor. The entire complex extends for nearly 2km along the road. Many of the most sumptuous tombs bear epitaphs or inscriptions that warn transgressing grave-robbers of the dire fate that awaits them, while forecourts hold benches that were used for visits by the deceased’s relatives.
