Chapter Thirteen

“What do you think will happen when Jagger finds the man who drugged me and kidnapped me?” Grace asked as soon as they were alone in their room and Khai had shut and locked the door.

“I’m not sure, love. It’s going to be sticky. He’ll probably have to talk to Diane, his boss, and come up with a diplomatic way to handle the situation. I promise the man will not get away with this. I don’t care that he’s a cop, but we might have to be patient.”

“Do you think he knows I escaped, and he’s trying to find me, too?” She stood in the middle of the room, rubbing her palms together nervously.

Khai took her shoulders and brought his forehead to hers. “Not likely. He probably doesn’t know. He isn’t connected to Chekov. He was paid to turn you over to Russo. Russo isn’t really connected, either. He wasn’t the one who arranged your sale. He was simply the middleman.”

She shuddered. “There was nothing simple about Master J.”

“You’re right. Sorry. I didn’t mean that the way it came out.” He slid his arms around her and hauled her closer. “How about if you use the bathroom first, and then I will. We need sleep.”

She stared at him for a moment and then agreed. “Okay.”

He wasn’t sure if she was going to badger him about sex or not, but he figured it was about to come up again. He only had so much willpower.

After kissing her forehead, he turned her toward the bathroom. While she was gone, he opened all the boxes he’d hauled up here after dinner so she could at least rustle through them and find what she needed. He wondered if they should unpack tomorrow and put things in the drawers and the closet.

It seemed weird to move into this house. They were relying heavily on the hospitality of strangers. For now, Khai didn’t have another plan. Grace was safer here than anyplace else he could take her. The thought of her having spent the past three months at his cabin made him cringe. She’d been so close to the house she’d escaped from. Someone could have found her. She’d been fucking lucky.

When Grace emerged from the bathroom, he passed her and traded places with her. He shut and locked the door on the other side of the bathroom that led to another bedroom. They obviously weren’t going to need it. No matter when she managed to break him down and convince him to have sex with her, he’d been sleeping next to her in the cabin for a month. They weren’t going to stop that now. He’d never fall asleep alone in another room where he couldn’t hold her.

Khai used the toilet, washed his hands, and splashed water on his face. A cold shower would probably be overkill. When he bent to rummage through the smaller box they’d tossed all their toiletries in that morning, he found his toothbrush but hesitated as his gaze landed on the unopened boxes of tampons and pads.
