Chapter 7

Rob looked shocked. “Once again, we’re back where we started!” he exclaimed. “So there is a link between Lambert and Raven.” Then he frowned as a new thought struck him. “On the other hand, I never heard that Raven’s mob was into stealing. As far as I knew, they were only interested in acts of terrorism.”

Jenn shrugged. “Well, there certainly is a link between Lambert and Raven’s family,” Jenn said. “I think it’s safe to bet that Lambert was in London to steal something—and that Buzzy and Lilah were involved somehow. But what could have gone wrong? Who stabbed Lambert? And why?”

“I think we should stick to our plan,” Rob insisted. “Let’s check out the area around the Tower. If Lambert really was ‘casing the joint,’ as you Yanks would say, maybe we’ll find what he was looking for. Could be a jewelry store. Or it might even be—”

“Wait a minute,” Jenn said. “First, let’s pick up a copy of that events magazine of yours. What’s it called?”

“Time Out,” Rob said. “Good idea. The datebook listings might give us an idea of what Lambert was after.”

They headed toward Tower Hill. As they walked, Jenn glanced about. She was still hoping to spot something— anything—that might have attracted Lambert to this place.

On their right, Jenn saw Tower Hill. It was the exact spot where most of the Tower’s prisoners had been beheaded. She remembered reading that only seven people had been executed inside the Tower, but literally hundreds had been executed at Tower Hill.

On their left was the Church of All Hallows. Jenn knew that a church of one kind or another had stood on that site for 1,300 years. Amazingly, the church that stood there today contained some bricks that dated back to the Roman occupation of Britain.

“What could he have been after? I see historical buildings everywhere,” she said to Rob. “I see plenty of shops and tourist attractions. But I don’t see anything that would interest a thief and a group of terrorists. Are we making bad guesses again?”

“Tuesday,” Rob said thoughtfully. He stopped and gazed at Jenn. “Whatever Lambert had planned, it wasn’t going to take place until Tuesday.”

“So?” She frowned, puzzled.

“So far, we’re guessing that Lambert wanted to break in some place to steal something, right?” Jenn nodded. “But what if he planned to break in for another reason? What if he was looking for a place where Raven’s group could rig a bomb? Or maybe set a fire?”

Jenn stared at him in horror. “Then it could be any place where people gather—if that’s what Raven’s group is really after.” She thought for a moment. “It doesn’t make sense. Lambert never tried to get into places that had a lot of security. If Raven’s group wanted to rig up a bomb in a public place, why would they use Lambert, of all people?”

Rob looked worried. “We’d better get a copy of Time Out,” he said.

They hurried to the nearest shop that sold newspapers. They found everything there from gum to postcards to packages of cookies—which the British call biscuits.
