It shouldn’t have surprised her to find Jace at the head of the studio when she came in for her Advanced Ballet Technique class, but it did. He barely offered her a passing glance as she walked in and took a free spot at the barre. Since he was busy flipping through a small pile of CDs with his back turned towards her, Kat used the free moments while other students filed in to stretch out on the barre.

She kicked her ankle upwards until her heel hooked on the wooden beam and pulled her arms up before bending at her waist and leaning forwards until her chin and nose brushed against her knee cap. She held this pose for several seconds, feeling the muscles in her legs and back relax into the stretch before allowing her leg to fall and switching to the opposite side.

Just as Kat was about to lower her second leg to the floor, her eyes caught sight of Jace’s in the mirror at the front of the room. She could feel her heart stutter and her breath catch as their eyes locked and held for what seemed an eternity. The heat of his stare made something twist and bend inside of her, filling her with a longing she had never known before.

A figure walked up next to her at the barre, forcing her to break the connection in the mirror, which stabbed at her heart like a knife. It didn’t surprise Kat at all to find that Jasmine was the source of this disappointment. Kat took a deep steadying breath and reluctantly dropped her leg to turn her attention on the girl.

“So, I heard they gave you the advanced spot simply because of your mommy. How does it feel to know that every other person in this room is here because we actually deserve it?” Jasmine hissed.

“That’s enough, Jasmine,” a dark voice spoke up from behind her.

Jasmine turned to find Jace standing behind her, glaring. “Well good morning, Mr. Inwood,” she said, stressing his name as if it were an insult. Kat wasn’t sure why, but for some reason the sound of his name falling from Jasmine’s lips seemed to sting him.

“Good morning,” he replied coolly, “Please take your place now, Jasmine,” he ordered, tossing his head. Jasmine let out a loud sigh and moved away from Kat towards the barre on the opposite wall.

Jace’s eyes shifted back to Kat’s, looking as though he wanted to say something but was uncertain of how or what. The struggle was evident in his features, making Kat feel suddenly awkward and uncomfortable. In an effort to end his agony, Kat turned back towards the barre and completed a few more minor stretches, freeing Jace to walk back up towards the front of the room.

A few moments later Jace gave instructions on the different techniques they would be learning over the next few weeks. Kat watched his every move with rapt attention, mentally noting how his body exuded both strength and grace.
