Chapter 8

As another meeting came to a close and Ashton watched Amanda gather her notes and files the urge to take her right there was overwhelming. Over the last month and a half, the time with her was making his feelings for her grow even more. He didn’t want to be the first to say how he felt because he knew she did still have feeling for her husband. It was funny to him at that time he considered her husband to be to the other man. As if Ashton was the first man in her life. The thought of her spending anytime with him was also getting harder to tolerate.

“Mr. Douglas, are you okay?” Amanda asked because she noticed the look of anger come across Ashton’s face.

“I’m fine Amanda. I mean Mrs. Washington.”

The way he called her by her last name sounded as if it was a bad taste in his mouth. She knew how he felt about having to call her by her last name because it was a reminder to him that she was a married woman. A woman married to someone else.

“You looked as if something was troubling you,” she said putting the last of her things together.

“No. I’m fine. Just think that’s all,” he responded giving her a business smile.

“Well if you say so.”

“What are you doing for lunch?” he asked changing the subject.

“You know what I’m doing for lunch.”

“When will I get lunch with you?”

“I thought we agreed not to discuss this topic,” Amanda said reminding him that anything she did with Neil would not be discussed if they were to have a relationship.

“It seems I get less time with you than he does.”

“I’m not going to discuss this, Ashton,” she said as she gathered her files and walked out of the room.

“She could feel him behind her before he spoke. “Maybe we need to revisit our earlier decision on that topic.”

“And you want to talk about it now?”

“Yes,” he said just as the elevator doors opened as they stepped inside and rode to her floor in silence with the other passengers.

When the elevator stopped at Amanda’s floor she exited first and Ashton flowed close behind her still. She didn’t want to talk about the time she was spending with Neil with Ashton just as she didn’t want to tell Neil about Ashton.

“Mrs. Washington, there was a delivery that came for you,” Helen said as Amanda and Ashton approached her desk.

“Is it in my office?” Amanda asked.

“Yes it is,” Helen said smiling but cut it short when she noticed a look on Amanda’s face. “Did your meeting go well?”

“Oh, the meeting went well. Can you take my notes and have them typed and emailed to me?”

“Yes, of course,” Helen said taking the files Amanda handed her just before she turned towards her closed office door with Ashton close behind.

“I still think we should talk,” Ashton whispered after they had stepped a few feet away from Helen’s desk.

Amanda didn’t respond to him because she did not want to talk about her time.
