As I explained these four pieces about feedback to Russell, he experienced an aha moment. He decided to let go of his hope and expectation that his manager would do anything with his feedback. It was simply not in his personality or management style, and Russell clearly was not going to change him. Instead, he shifted his energy to find ways to help the line staff know they were appreciated in an effort to keep morale up. While the manger appeared to not comprehend his impact on his department employees, Russell believed that learning about feedback lifted his burden and that helped.

Feedback is essential for monitoring progress and it allows you to gauge your impact on others. If you do not know your impact on others, you are not paying attention. There is information all around you because the system is always giving you feedback. The manager in Russell’s story either did not know or appear to care about his impact on the group. The gift of feedback is that it is always available to you because the system is always giving you feedback. Do people respond when you ask questions? Do others listen to your opinion? Do you feel welcome when you attend meetings? What are the nonverbal communication messages you see? There are many signals of feedback that you should pay attention to so that you understand your impact on others. Not paying attention signals that you do not care or may be afraid to find out more. Also, if you appear to be paying attention but are really multitasking, looking at your mobile device, or are otherwise distracted, you are clearly sending a message to others that they are not important.
