Chapter Five

Brett’s stomach gave a growl as he walked through the station around four thirty. The heat had gotten bad, and he’d removed his suit jacket, draping it over his desk chair. He wanted nothing more than to strip and jump into a bath. Not that he had a bath. His apartment was too small for that, but a cool shower would be a nice second. He couldn’t do either because the lying fiancé had just walked into the station.

Hailey Michaels sauntered toward him in a slim-fitting black dress. It was sleeveless, showing off her muscular arms. The heels she wore clacked on the floor, echoing through the quiet room. He led her into interrogation one and waited a moment for Genius to join them. Then he faced the woman that had lied to him. Despite that lie, he didn’t believe Hailey would have killed her fiancé, Alex, but a woman scorned could be unpredictable. “You lied.” He spoke the moment Genius entered and closed the door. Brett laid his phone on the table with the image in full view. “You were there for a money drop. You knew Alex was lying to you about working for NASA.”

She swallowed hard, her Adam’s apple bobbing. “No. It’s not like that.”

“Then tell me how it is, Hailey.” Brett sat, keeping his voice even but stern. “Your fiancé is dead. We’re trying to find the killer, and you’re lying to us.”

“He’s a cop!” she blurted, then shoved her hands over her mouth.

Had he heard that right? He glanced at Genius, who looked as shocked as he felt. “Excuse me?”

“He’s not a scammer. Alex Parker is a cop. He’s…” She took a deep breath and lowered her voice. “He’s an undercover cop. He told me all this before he proposed. He didn’t really work at NASA. He was an undercover cop, and he wanted me to know the truth.”

Well, fuck. That could be legit. Maybe. Brett narrowed his eyes. “Wouldn’t that be a lie a conman would say? He lied about NASA, was afraid you’d find out, so he goes with an undercover cop. You’re a smart woman, Hailey. You can’t tell me you believed him.” Although, Brett was wondering now. No. No. If he was an undercover cop, that captain would have been looking for a John Doe in the morgues. They hadn’t received any such requests.

“He was investigating that company. The guy he met in the alley was Parker’s inside contact. He was worried if anything happened to him, what I would think, so he told me the truth. He was an undercover police office. I swear. He’s not a conman.”

Brett stood. “We’ll be back.” He wasn’t sure what else to say. It was doubtful that was the truth, but this meant another dead end. They were back to square fucking one.

“Now what?” Genius asked.

Brett stood outside the door, frowning. “We have no evidence, no hard evidence, that she was involved with the scam. No other leads. This case is going cold.”

“But, what if…”

“No,” Brett cut him off, moving to his desk.
