You can never become a full member of your horse’s herd because it is capable of distinguishing a horse from a human. Despite this you can still become a friend, albeit on a non-equine basis.

Dominance training in the light of behavioural science

B

ehavioural researchers discovered the first simple hierarchies in a variety of animal species at the beginning of the twentieth century. Once the same patterns of behaviour had been looked for among horses the fate of dominance theory in horse training started to run its course. Regardless of later discoveries and developing knowledge, popular methods of training were established using the principle of a herd’s social structure. Depending on the trends prevailing at the time, different models emerged: the ‘lead stallion’ model, the ‘lead mare’ principle, or a system of a dominant form of body language. All of these trends assumed that a person could take up a level of social standing within a group of horses and create respect by showing ‘dominant’ behaviour. The dominant person would make all the decisions for their horse, and in turn the horse would obey them unquestioningly. The methods used to achieve this vary, but they have certain similarities, such as the concept of pressure and release, by which the horse has to decide between two unpleasant choices – to give in to pressure or to avoid it.
