Chapter 13

Week 6

The first two days were spent learning how to find information on suspects, search engines that you can use to access files that were difficult to find, how to sort out the necessary information from the useless, and how to organize everything so that it forms the perfect picture. Wednesday and Thursday, they went over building clearing, searches, CLS, weapons handling, verbal and silent communications, takedowns, silent entry techniques, and interrogations.

Sarge instructed everyone to report in business casual clothes on Friday morning for training. When 0700 came around and the sarge stepped into the warehouse, the team drew a collective breath. She was wearing black pumps, black dress slacks, with a burgundy silk shirt. Her strawberry blond hair was down, showing off its full body and slight wave, stopping right between her shoulder blades. Miceli was the quickest to pull her eyes away from her.

Jen had finally watched her interrogation video the night before and was shocked at what she saw. Watching herself being carried in, dropped, and constantly messed with for more than forty-eight hours without food, all the while trying to protect the same person who stood over her a majority of the time, pissed her off. She watched it over and over until she thought that she had it memorized, but as she was about to turn it off and finally crash for the night, something caught her eye. She rewound the tape and played it again. How could she have missed it? Every time she was nudged, picked up, slammed down, or in general touched, Sarge had turned her head away. Fast-forwarding to the last few minutes of her “captivity,” Jen watched the TV intently. The sarge could have stopped herself from being knocked to the ground, but she didn’t. If she had stepped out of the way like anyone else would have, she would have gone headfirst into one of the support posts for the house; instead, the sarge took the hit in order to deflect her. Jen didn’t know what to think.

“James, I need you to grab the comm. equipment. Douglas, I acquired a laptop for our use, if you would grab it out of my office. Antonelli, get the CLS kit. And, O’Malley, here are the keys to the van, go get it.”

With the exception of the sarge and Miceli, everyone scattered. When the sarge was sure that they were alone, she addressed Miceli. “Miceli, is everything okay with you?” She had been a bit distant since her interrogation.

“I am fine, Sarge. I am just ready to get started.”

“The key to invisible or stealth surveillance is to be one step ahead of the person that you are watching.” Putting her comm. link in, she began. “Radio check, this is Blue One.”

In order, they all responded, “Blue Two, Blue Three, Blue Four, Blue Five, Blue Six.” Taking a deep breath, she continued on, “Every person on a team has a job. Be it a specialty or joint, each person is instrumental in attaining success.
