This justification and encouragement of retaliatory aggression has electrified some of Trump’s supporters, vindicating actions that would have previously been frowned upon.

When Julia Ioffe wrote an article about Melania Trump, Trump’s current wife, for GQ, Mrs. Trump responded with criticism: “There are numerous inaccuracies in this article including certain statements about my family and claims on personal matters.”15 Within one day of the article’s publication, Ioffe started receiving threats and offensive messages from Trump supporters. They referred to her Jewish heritage, telling her she should be sent to a concentration camp, burned in an oven, or shot in the head. She received calls inquiring about overnight casket delivery and recordings of Hitler’s speeches.16 Trump said he did “not condone violence in any shape,”17 but he would not discourage his supporters from engaging in the retaliatory aggression suffered by the likes of Ioffe and other journalists. Instead of condemning the hateful actions among this group of his followers, Trump responded: “I don’t have a message to the fans. A woman wrote an article that’s inaccurate.”18

Trump has also employed retaliatory aggression against the current administration. Trump voters are dissatisfied with the policies of the current administration of President Obama. Building on frustration connected with increased unemployment and the decreasing social and financial status of White blue-collar workers, Trump has shown he is not only in touch with the anger and frustration of his followers but also feels it:

People come [to Trump campaign events] with tremendous passion and love for their country…. When they see what’s going on in this country, they have anger that’s unbelievable. They have anger. They love this country. They don’t like seeing bad trade deals. They don’t like seeing higher taxes. They don’t like seeing a loss of their jobs…. And I see it.19
