Notes
1. Achille Starace (August 18, 1889âApril 29, 1945) joined the Fascist movement in Trento in 1920 and shortly thereafter became the local political secretary. In October 1921, Starace became vice-secretary of the National Fascist Party March on Rome. His career reached its peak when he was made Party Secretary of the National Fascist Party. He was appointed to the position primarily for his unquestioning loyalty to Mussolini. As secretary, Starace staged huge parades and marches, and proposed anti-Semitic racial segregation measures. He was dismissed as Party Secretary in 1939. In 1943, after the collapse of the regime he was arrested even though his real power had ended two years earlier. He was subsequently released. He attempted unsuccessfully to regain Mussoliniâs favor in the Repubblica Sociale and was arrested once again, but this time by his former colleagues on charges that he had weakened the party during his tenure as Party Secretary and sent to a concentration camp in Verona. He was once again released and settled in Milan, where on April 29, 1945, he was recognized by partisans, subsequently executed, and strung up next to Mussolini in Piazzale Loreto.
2. Roger Stone and Paul Manafort were both pardoned by Donald Trump shortly before he left office in December 2020.
3. The Victor Emmanuel II National Monument also referred to as the Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) as it holds the guarded eternal flame at the tomb of an unknown Italian soldier from WWI. The monument was built in honor of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of unified Italy, and is located in Piazza Venezia in the center of Rome. The monument itself is often regarded as pompous and too large. Foreigners often call it âthe wedding cakeâ; Romans commonly call it âthe typewriter.â
