MONDAY MORNING the phone rang and Callum nearly fell out of bed trying to get to it. “Yes, what is it? I’m here,” he barked, trying to unfold his naked self from the sheets. What on earth had he done in his sleep to get his leg wrapped up like this? It wasn’t as if he had anyone in bed with him to roll around with, which he was starting to feel acutely. Especially when he first awoke. And especially in one particular place on his body. Light shone sharply through the windows and he scowled, squinting against the sunlight as he pushed his getting-too-long dark hair off his forehead. He needed the sleep, but he always felt this crazy time-warp sensation when he awoke so late in the morning. Still kicking halfheartedly to free his leg, he reached for his bedside clock. Whoa. It was after noon.

“It’s me.”

“What’s wrong, Maggie?” he asked his sister, the department’s dispatcher.

“I think you should get down here right now, Callum.”

Calls like this had been frequent since Jess had broken his arm and ribs. “I’ll be there. What is it? Is Luke in yet?”

“Not yet.” There was a lot of noise coming from Maggie’s end. “Don’t you remember? He’s not scheduled until this afternoon. Mac was all alone here this morning.”

“Right.” Callum rubbed his eyes, recalling the schedules he had made out. “But he’s still wet behind the ears.”

“You can say that again.” More noise. It sounded as if there was some commotion down at the station.

“What’s going on, Maggie?”

“Just get down here.” Then she hung up. He could have sworn she was laughing. She didn’t give him any codes, nothing to alert him to an emergency, so he had no idea what exactly was wrong.

He pulled himself free of the sheets and trudged to the bathroom. He dressed quickly in a pair of jeans and a faded denim shirt, then slid into his boots.

As he walked through the kitchen on his way out, he saw his overweight cat, Mabel, sitting patiently on the countertop, her calico tail swishing. Callum sighed and quickly opened a can of food and left it on the counter beside the perpetually perky cat.

Mabel had been a gift to Callum from his sister when he’d first moved back to town. He could barely tolerate the cat at first because he had always fancied himself a dog man, but the nosy cat had soon grown on him. Not that he would ever tell another living soul. Not even his sister, whom he suspected already knew because Harold at the grocery store told her Callum bought the most expensive canned cat food he had.

He patted the cat on the head, earning his ears the buzz of her broken chainsaw purr. Walking outside into the warm, bone-dry day, he climbed into his dusty, old black Jeep Cherokee. He headed out, yawning most of the way.

One of the reasons he had taken over the sheriff’s job after old Ronald Cobb died midterm was because he’d owed Tried and True.
