Lauren is the legitimate godfather of Preppy. He held on to and expanded the genre when other American designers had given it up in favor of more European looks: the super-­broad-shouldered look that Giorgio Armani propagandized in the ’70s, for instance, or the Carnaby Street look, a debacle that is almost beyond description in the realm of tastelessness. But following your own lights can pay off, and Lauren became a beacon of taste in that otherwise bleak era. The tie-dyed, flower-power, grubby revolutionary look and the Italian Superman look have both disappeared, and Ivy is still here.

Ralph Lauren is still here too, joined by American Ivy interpreters such as Thom Browne and Michael Bastian, a host of smaller design labels, blog sites, and e-commerce stores, and a plethora of Japanese labels and manufacturers, each of which has adopted this uniquely American look in their own way. Brooks, owned by an Italian corporation, may have gone international, but Ivy style remains the most enduring genre of American dress, from its early-twentieth-century origins to its evolving incarnations today.
