Chapter Fifteen

Connor

Old Glory

WE’VE GOT A game plan when we part ways with Dixon. He’s headed to the airport to meet with Ronald Warren, who’s still in charge out there. Dixon will approach things as if he’s there to close the Aurora case. He’s hoping Reece’s dad can shed light on what LuAnn might have been looking into.

Meanwhile, Lilah and I head to the offices of the True Gazette. We’re hoping to find connections between Aurora Corp. and the local Alaskan State Troopers. Researching will take a lot less time with Sura’s help. Lie thinks if we can connect all the dots, we might be able to figure out where they’re holding Lu. I don’t have the heart to say that it doesn’t make much sense to keep Lu if she doesn’t have information on Aurora 10’s location, but for all I know, she does. Maybe Delilah told her she has 10. I have no idea. Lie’s kept me in the dark this long. Who knows what else she hasn’t told me.

I call ahead and Sura’s secretary asks me to hold. I use the opportunity to peek at Lilah. She demanded to drive again, and she’s gunning it like she stole it. I know that she knows I’m watching, and the more nonchalant she seems, the angrier I become.

I’m infuriated, but not about Aurora 10. I’m not surprised that she found the gold. I’d be an idiot to think she’d just quit hunting after our breakup. I want to ask a million questions, but every time I open my mouth, I’m struck muter than Boone.

I’m seething because she never told me those men were still harassing her.

I can’t stop myself from replaying that afternoon, when my friends and I got detention for going off campus for lunch without permission. I was supposed to spend the night at Lilah’s and was pissed at myself for nearly screwing things up because I was craving a Hula Burger.

“Aren’t Lilah’s parents out of town?” Brett asked as we rush for the exit. “Andi said something about it in geography, but I can’t hear her with all that cleavage.”

“Maybe.” I worked to keep the smirk off my face, but Matt and Paul exchanged loaded glances.

“Is there something going on with you two?” Paul eyed me closely, and I looked away.

“I knew it! The way you took off after Rucker when he grabbed Delilah’s ass…dude!” Paul grinned as we burst through the doors into air so cold it stole my breath. He elbowed Matt. “I fucking told you.”

Matt turned wide eyes on me. “You lucky bastard.”

We descended into the snow, Brett grilling me about whether Lilah has tan lines but his idiocy was garbled as I took in the scene transpiring in the parking lot. Lilah’s car was parked by the far gate near the street entrance. An SUV idled between it and us, exhaust emanating from the tailpipe. Unease swept over me, and I moved forward on instinct.

My mind stripped gears when Lilah zipped out from behind the SUV, sprinting toward the street.
