Chapter Seven

Taking a Chance

Anyone living in the Phoenix area in the late eighties or early nineties is sure to remember Rick Chance. Rick’s commercials ran continuously on every channel for many years. His business, Empire Glass, replaced car windshields, but he did it with flair and a marketing gimmick that worked amazingly.

The desert landscapes of Arizona meant lots of small rocks. Tiny rocks fly on the endless Phoenix freeway system, resulting in chips and cracks in car windshields. Rick Chance saw a massive opportunity. In 1982, he made deals with insurance companies and local restaurants to create Empire Glass.

Rick was the spokesman in his own commercials. He advertised that he would replace your windshield when it cracked at little or no cost to you and give you twelve free dinners at a nice restaurant for the trouble. Who’s going to turn that down? Nobody. It was a massive success—so much so that after two decades, what started as a one-man operation, had expanded into six states was raking in $25 million a year.
