Chapter Twelve

Leigh rested quietly in the rocking chair that sat in the corner of the bedroom. It had been several days since the fiasco at the charity gala. She felt tired. Being constantly on guard was taking a toll on everyone. As the team gathered information and followed General Van Buren, Major Broadmore, and Lieutenant Whitfield around, Leigh focused on learning to control the electrical energy that seemed to spark when she was angry.

She practiced concentrating on directing the energy at specific targets, but it was hard work and required a lot of concentration. Ethan always took her to a safe place outside to practice. So far, she had only managed to fry some bushes and a pile of logs. Thank goodness Ethan had the forethought to bring a fire extinguisher with them on their little excursions.

It had taken several attempts, but Leigh was now able to gather the energy from around her and direct it toward a target. The strikes were weak but were getting stronger as Leigh learned how to pull more and more energy to her.

Ethan was impressed with her progress, and when he told everyone at dinner one night of her progress, Ian commented, “Remind me not to piss you off, Commander.”

Everyone laughed and nodded.

Leigh laid her head back and closed her eyes as she continued to rock. The rocking relaxed her and often when she couldn’t sleep, she would sit and rock until she could relax her mind.

Slowly, Leigh relaxed, and then her mind drifted into a gentle, restful state of peace. She allowed herself to think about her future with Ethan and the possibility of building a life together, maybe even starting a family of their own one day.

The thoughts were happy ones, and she continued to daydream about having a home and children with Ethan—always Ethan. Leigh never knew that it was possible to feel so strongly about another person. Before the explosion, she had seen nothing but loneliness in her life, but now she looked forward to the future. At least, a future after they had dealt with the general and his minions. Leigh continued to rock and dream. She let go of all the chaos of recent days and slipped into a peaceful doze.

Outside of her room, a stream of energy, dark and malevolent, slithered toward her, like a giant serpent. Slowly, it flowed into Leigh’s room and began to wrap around her like a snake coiling around its prey. It surrounded her in its evil tentacles. When it surrounded her, the energy began to constrict, squeezing the very life’s breath from her lungs.

Leigh’s eyes popped open, and she realized that she was in dire straits. She couldn’t breathe, and the menacing energy continued to strangle her tighter and tighter. Whoever was controlling this malevolent force was trying to suffocate her.

She struggled to move, but the evil presence held fast. When she couldn’t break free, she tried to call out to Ethan, but something prevented her from reaching out to him telepathically.
