CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Sheriff Haskell Mooner and Mayor Grantham met Bainbridge and several of his men on the trail heading to Dave Boulson’s ranch. The Mayor was riding in his fancy carriage and Mooner was sitting next to him. Bainbridge led the men and when they reached the carriage, they reined in and stopped. Bainbridge rode up next to the Mayor.

“Morning Mayor, Morning Sheriff,” he said in a calm demeanor.

“Morning,” they replied in unison. Mooner stepped out of the carriage and stretched.

“How do you want to handle this boss?” he asked Bainbridge.

“I’ll let you know when we get to Boulson’s ranch,” he cautioned.

“Alright, let’s get going,” agreed Mooner as he climbed back up in the carriage.

“How’s that shiny badge of yours?” Bonwell asked Mooner playfully.

“It suits me just fine,” Mooner said as the Mayor slapped the reins on the rumps of the horses.

Dave Boulson saw the cloud of dust coming toward them off in a distance. Two of his ranch hands were working on building a fire to get the branding irons hot enough to rebrand the ten head that Hurless had given him in trade for the loan. Boulson always worked right alongside his men every day. His wife had passed several years ago from some unknown disease. He and the two ranch hands waited for the approaching men and one of them walked into the barn and got two rifles just in case it might turn out to be trouble. As Soon as Boulson saw the white carriage, he let out a guttural moan and frowned.

“Is that the Mayor’s carriage?” one of them asked Boulson.

“Yeah, and whenever he shows up, it’s always trouble,” he carped. As the carriage and Bainbridge and his men finally came to a stop, Boulson leaned on the railing. Bainbridge looked at the ten head in the corral and then directly at Boulson.

“You getting ready to brand my cattle?” he asked Boulson in a polite manner. Boulson looked back at the ten head and frowned.

“I bought these cattle from Starling Hurless.”

“I don’t doubt that, but when you bought them, they belonged to me,” refuted Bainbridge. “I paid cash and the bank has the deed to prove it.”

“I don’t doubt that either, especially with the way the Mayor there runs the town,” Boulson said with a hint of anger in his voice.

“I run the town just fine,” countered the Mayor, holding his head up proudly.

“You and those town councilmen are all a bunch of thieving liars and crooks,” barked Boulson, as his two men spread apart, anxious looks on their faces, slowly bringing their rifles up slightly. Mooner jumped out of the carriage and glared at the two ranch hands.

“You two best check your attitudes,” he warned them. Boulson turned to his men and motioned for them to lower the rifles.

“That’s better,” said Mooner with a devious smirk on his face.

“There’s no need for any violence here,” suggested Bainbridge. “I’m sure we can come to some agreeable arrangement here.”

“And what would that be?” queried Boulson.

“How much did you pay for the cattle?” he asked.
