Chapter 12

Gasdrig considered killing Ivan. He deserved it. He was risking everything.

“I was angry. I needed to blow off some steam,” Ivan said, his face turned away from Gasdrig as he drove them away from Pinetree Paradise.

“When you need to blow off steam,” Gasdrig said, irritated at the odd American phrase, “then run a couple miles. What you did was stupid and risky and...wrong.” Gasdrig had daughters. He’d easily kill a man who’d done what Ivan had done.

Two things stopped him. He needed him. But as importantly, how could he face Ivan’s mother afterward? He’d loved Maret long before she’d married another. That act and the child she had with her new husband less than a year later had sent both their lives in a different direction. But love did not die easily.

“You don’t understand,” whined Ivan. “We’ve come up empty. It was no longer in the brown bag and not at her house. We’re running out of places and time.”

“I understand perfectly. But I have not done anything to complicate our lives. Now we have no place to stay. Plus, we’re no longer free to move around. We must stay out of sight in the event that somebody saw you or a camera picked you up somewhere.” It would make it much harder to watch Erin McGarry, but he did have an idea about that.

“There were no cameras,” Ivan said. “The place is a dump.”

“You don’t know that. The police may be very attentive to this.”

“Like I’ve said before, all cops are stupid.” Ivan rolled down his window and spit.

Gasdrig decided to save his breath. He needed to think. They’d been watching the redheaded woman yesterday when she’d left her store, went home, and then less than an hour later, had left the house with the brown bag over her shoulder. They’d had to curtail any approach at the time because a neighbor had been outside, watering flowers.

They’d followed the woman to the hospital parking lot, but again, there’d been too many people around. We wait. That was what he’d told Ivan. And he’d been confident that it had been worth it when she’d left hours later, after the sun had set and the parking lot had been quiet.

Ivan had been quick about it, just as Gasdrig had instructed. The bag had been theirs, but despair had quickly followed when it became evident that the thumb drive they needed was no longer in it. Ivan had wanted to go back and force the woman to tell him where it was, but by that time, there were people gathering.

They’d intended to hit the house during the night. Had parked several blocks away and come in on foot only to see the cop parked outside. He was not going to kill a cop unless he had to. They’d returned home, pledging that tomorrow would be the day.

It had ended up being pathetically easily to get inside the house. A broken window, a turned bolt lock. Child’s play. But their search had revealed nothing except to convince them that it was not in the house.
