The sun was touching the western horizon when I stumbled into the courtyard where Sam was waiting for me. We often met in the courtyard on a random daily schedule where he hand-delivered me a coffee fix.

“Hey,” I said, collapsing in a heap beside him. I winced at hitting the wooden bench too hard. Some of my hair escaped the ski cap I had yanked down on my head and I tucked it back beneath the bright strands of wool.

“Hey,” Sam said, handing me a cup of coffee.

I took a sip and felt the caffeine recharge my blood. “You need to tell me your secret coffee hideout one day, you know? Just in case I need to make you an emergency cup.”

Sam grinned. “Never.”

I pouted. Somewhere in the hospital he had nested a coffee machine and a stash of roasted beans. I had tried but failed to find his hideout.

He laughed at the pout on my face. “Darce, if I tell you where it is, you’ll overindulge and not be able to sleep for months.”

At the mention of sleep, I yawned. A big, ugly, tonsil-showing yawn.

“When does your shift end?” Sam asked, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

I looked at my watch. “Ten. Theoretically. You?”

“I finished an hour ago.”

My whole body smiled. He was here feeding me coffee instead of going home for a well-deserved rest. “I love you,” I murmured as I rested my head against his shoulder.

“Really?” said the amused voice of my plutonic-pseudo-not-quite-girlfriend-friend. Her label confused me.

I opened my eyes to smile at Olivia. I had texted her that I was meeting Sam and had hoped that I’d catch her on one of the rare occasions she was on rotations in my hospital. I hadn’t expected her to have company, though.

It was Pearl. I shut my eyes again.

“This is Pearl. Pearl, this is Sam. You know Darcy.”

“Please tell me you have coffee,” Kara said, sweeping into the courtyard before I had a chance to say hi to the newcomer.

“And Kara,” Olivia muttered.

Sam held up a cup and Kara sat down on his other side and sighed. “I just spent the last four hours assisting in back-to-back breast augmentations. Why would you go from a B-cup to a double-G cup?” Kara shook her head. “Ridiculous. What are you doing here?” she said, directing her last question to Pearl.

“I’m Pearl.”

“I know.” Kara’s gaze shifted from Pearl to Olivia and back again before looking at me in question. “And Pearl is what? The new girlfriend?”

I choked on my coffee. A quick glance up to Olivia saw her glaring at Kara, and Pearl looked taken aback.

“She’s on the pediatric surgery rotation with me,” Olivia explained.

“And what? You made friends?” Kara asked, chuckling to herself.

That was a terrific question, and we all looked at Olivia for an answer. Pearl looked confused.

Olivia’s eyes narrowed. “We’ve been friends for some time, and it’s not that unreasonable.”

“Yeah, it kinda is,” Kara said, sipping at her coffee.

“Umm…so are you two together?” Pearl asked into the tense silence.
