After the nix and the troll are gone, I spend the next few minutes trying to figure out how to escape before someone comes for me.

The lock on my cage is pretty shoddy. If the nix can be believed, the iron bars are supposed to be enough to keep any fairy creature locked inside; the lock is more decorative than anything. One good kick with my boot and I’d be out.

Out of the cage, at least. That leaves me stuck in the tent. The shadow near the flap warns me that it’s still being guarded. Considering the huge size, it’s gotta be a troll. Stupid or not, no way I can sneak by him without getting caught.

What else can I do?

Since I’m pretty sure I’ll never make it past the troll guard, I stay put. I just hope that I find another chance to get out of this mess before they try to start the bidding.

I don’t know when to expect someone to come back for me. I wish I had more time with the nix. She offered me more information about being in Faerie than anyone else did and I could’ve kept going with the questions if I had the chance.

Like what did she mean when she said the word ‘survive’ like that?

It hits me for the first time that I… I might not make it back home after all. Even when I was squirming, my stomach hurting so, so bad, I never really thought I was going to die die. I guess I thought of this as an adventure, but not really a dangerous one.

And now I’m sitting in a locked cage, waiting to be sold at a Faerie market.

If I make it out of this in one piece, I’m going to need one heck of a therapist when I get back.

I’m so amped up, I hear every whisper, every step, every whistle as someone passes by my side of the tent. I keep my gaze trained on the flap, waiting for the shadow to shift, hoping that maybe the troll will have to go off and take a leak or something.

It would have to pee eventually, right?

Time crawls by. I start to feel uncomfortably hot and unbearably thirsty and I wonder if anyone would notice if I broke out just long enough to stick my whole head into the nix’s enclosure. I’m thinking it would be worth the risk to do it when, out of the corner of my eye, the troll moves.

My heart leaps into my throat.

Walk away, I will him. Just for a couple of minutes. Walk away so that I can run—

The flap lifts. The same troll that came for the nix is coming back for me.

He hits the lock on my cage door with one of his giant paws. It’s just as flimsy as I thought, or maybe the troll is just freakishly strong because the lock simply falls to the dirt. Either way, the cell door springs open.

“Stick out your hands,” he grumbles.
