REST AND RECOVERY

I’m just going to say it: for a working wife and mother and, well, for a woman in general, what in the hell is “rest”? I am never rested. Take a rest. What? You’re speaking another language, stranger!

Still, while sleeping in past 9:30 a.m. has not happened in over eleven years, I can attribute great importance to “recovery” and “rest.” Running yourself into the ground, which at times feels like a by-product of being a woman, should not be an attribute of triathlon. Triathlon should benefit your life, not complicate it. Of course, at times, triathlon will be a complicating factor. But the goal is to make triathlon a positive stressor—not a sanity killer.

To appreciate your workout days, you must relish your recovery days. To have a reasonably successful race day, you need to train smart. That means giving your muscles, your body, your soul, and your brain a rest from training.

There are typically three types of rest-and-recovery themes.
