Jessie closed the barn door, turned around, and pushed Seb’s stroller into the barn. Tempo, her horse, greeted her, like he did every time, with a snort and a waggle of his ears. What would she do without him? She shook her head to get rid of those thoughts. She didn’t need to sell him. She was sure Alan would let him stay here, even when she was moving to White Brook. And it wasn’t that far away; she could easily come here once a day to feed him and muck out his stall.

“Hey, Tempo.”

She entered his stall and the familiar scents of horse surrounded her. This was truly her happy place. Working with horses and helping people. Here she could be herself. No wall needed. No need for keeping up a public persona.

Tempo nibbled outside the pocket of her jeans, looking for a treat, and she offered him the apple she’d taken with her.

“I think I have to leave here.”

Tempo just looked at her with his big, kind eyes and chewed. “I don’t want to. I feel so safe here. Safe and happy.” Happier than she’d felt in a long time. And it was all Alan. “I think I’m falling in love with him, you know. I get this fluttery feeling every time he’s around. And when he looks at me…it’s like a physical caress and my whole body starts to tingle. I want to be sexy for him and I want…” She stopped and sighed. “But he deserves so much more. He deserves someone who has her shit together, someone like…Sara. One day he will wake up and realize what a hot mess I am, that I’m not worth the trouble…and then he will leave.”

A single tear ran down her cheek and she swiped it away with the back of her hand. “It’s just shitty timing. Maybe in a year…a few months even…when I have control over my life again…maybe then…” More tears made their way down her cheeks and soon she was full-on crying. And then what? What if they started dating? What if she let herself fall in love with him and then he would leave? What if he found out, once she and Seb weren’t living here anymore, that all there was between them was just…situational attraction…if there even was such a thing. Maybe their feelings were just enhanced because she and Seb needed him and he got to be their hero. What if all that changed? Would the feelings go away? She’d promised herself never to be naive and dependent on a man again. And look where she’d ended up. This was even worse than finding out that her long-time boyfriend was secretly married. This… Alan had the potential to break her heart. She looked at Seb who was entertaining himself with a toy. She couldn’t afford a broken heart.

There was a noise at the barn door and Jessie turned around when the door slowly opened.

Claire entered and behind her, Dorothy closed the barn door.
