Chapter Nine
“You should call him,” Whitney said as she checked to make sure Mr. Fuzzy Bottom was set for the night in the back of her office.
Lisa sighed and kept sweeping the floor. She’d worked as a vet tech for year, but the amount of hair and fur animals could shed never ceased to amaze her.
It had been nearly a week since she’d seen Trent, and although she had heard through Cage he was busy setting up a new security facility, a part of her hoped he might show up.
“He did say that it was on you,” Whitney said and closed the cage before looking at her.
The black and white fuzzy cat with a little black mustache rubbed his head against the bars for a little more attention.
“You know being with him is a bad idea.” Lisa returned her focus to sweeping.
Whitney huffed loudly. “I don’t know that.” She took the broom out of Lisa’s hand. “What are you waiting for?”
Lisa opened her mouth to respond but closed it. She really didn’t have an answer. Trent was a good man. He made her feel things when she was around him, but including him in her life just seemed like such a risk. She took the broom back.
“What is it with you girls and these womanizing men?” Sharon said as she came into the back. The short, aging woman worked the front desk and was known for her bitchy attitude.
Whitney bristled at the comment. “That was in their pasts.”
Sharon rolled her brown eyes up toward her overly bright blue eyeshadow.
“That’s what they all say,” she said and gathered her coat and purse. “Take it from someone who knows a thing or two. Men are pigs, and if you can avoid them, your life will be easier. Now I’m off to feed my boys.”
Whitney and Lisa glanced at one another. The old spinster had made her feelings about men very clear. Lisa might not be too sure about Trent, but she didn’t feel the same way as Sharon.
The front bell dinged loudly.
“Hi, Sharon,” Cage said, his voice as laid back as always.
They could hear Sharon huff loudly. “Men.”
“Lovely to see you,” Cage said, his voice full of teasing.
It was just a few moments before he walked into the back.
“About ready?” he asked.
Whitney scowled. “I wish she wouldn’t be so difficult.”
Cage came over and wrapped Whitney in a hug. Lisa might have been embarrassed if she hadn’t seen him do it a million times.
“She’s a lonely woman who only has her cats and this job,” he said. “I feel kind of sorry for her.”
Whitney nodded. It was obvious that Sharon had been hurt and just never got over it. Being angry at someone like that just didn’t do much good.
Lisa blushed as her friends kissed briefly. She tried to focus on her sweeping.
“Just give us a minute,” Whitney said.
Lisa shook her head. “You all go ahead. I’m sure you want to get home to Alex and Hank.”
Cage gave a sheepish grin. For a
