Andy parked a few houses from Laurel’s and carried the pizza down the narrow lane to her cottage. The pizza place had been jammed, and she was a few minutes later than she’d said she’d be. A light shone through the window next to the door, and she rapped lightly, anticipation welling in her chest. She recognized the feeling, but usually she associated it with that tense, adrenaline-charged energy right before a contest. This was a little bit different than that pre-game high, the edges of her excitement somehow reaching into places that had nothing to do with competition—the pit of her stomach, the hairs on the backs of her arms, the muscles high on the inside of her thighs. Her body was charged, and she was breathing a little fast. Definitely not her pre-match state, when she often sank into watchful awareness—calm, but alert. She didn’t feel calm now, but she sure as hell felt revved in every fiber of her being.

The buzz was better than any victory-high she could remember.

The door opened, and Laurel stood on the threshold. For a second, Andy lost her voice. A hazy gold light shone from behind Laurel, filtered through a tinted lampshade somewhere in the room, or maybe a bit of sunlight had been trapped inside and took this chance to escape. Her hair flowed loose around her shoulders, free of the band or clasp or whatever it was she usually wore when she was working, and the little bit of breeze wafting in through the open door made the waves lift and flutter. She’d changed into a sleeveless pale green shirt, a couple of buttons at the top open, and blue jeans that hugged the curve of her thighs and ended at her ankles above soft-looking tan flats. Casual, and beautiful.

“Hi,” Laurel said into the silence. Her smile was a bit questioning, and her eyes a little bit amused.

“Oh.” That was eloquent. Andy cleared her throat. “Hi. Sorry I’m late. The pizza took a while.”

“That’s okay, you’re here now.” Laurel stepped back. “Come on in. I needed a few minutes to pick up, anyway. I hustled out of here in the middle of the night.”

“You must be beat,” Andy said, saying a little silent prayer that Laurel wasn’t going to suggest they postpone their…meal.

“Not too bad.” Laurel gestured to a small table adjacent to a window looking out onto a carefully tended flower garden and expanse of lawn. “Have a seat. I’ll get us plates and whatnot. I’ve got juice, beer, hard cider, lemonade, and spring water.”

“Water’s good.” Andy set the pizza box in the center of the round table and its two chairs. The whole cottage was small enough to take in in one glance. Everything you needed was there, but sort of in miniature. Even the table was the kind of little table she saw out on balconies, with scrolly wrought iron legs and a white ceramic top with tiny inlaid blue tiles around the edges. “This place is nice.
